Quick definition · 2 min AI term
Context rot
Context rot is when an AI coding assistant slowly loses track of earlier details in a long session and starts contradicting itself or inventing things.
Think of it like
A helper who has been working all day and is getting tired, mixing up what you told them an hour ago.
Example
After a long chat the AI “forgets” a file it wrote earlier, or mentions a tool that does not exist. That is context rot.
Why it matters
Long vibe-coding sessions degrade. Knowing why helps you fix it: start a fresh chat, or remind the AI of the key facts.
